<title>Obituary: Chelation Pioneer, Dr. Edward McDonagh</title>

            <td style="width: 565px;">Dr. Edward Wolff McDonagh passed away peacefully July 8, 2018 surrounded by family in Scottsdale Arizona at the age of 86.<br />
            <br />
            He was born in Pittsburgh , PA in 1932 to James and Catherine (Wolff) McDonagh.  Edward attended Pre-Medical school at LaSalle College and Temple University in Philadelphia. He entered the Army in 1955 and served in the 21st Infantry in Korea and Japan. He then attended Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. McDonagh established McDonagh Medical Center in Gladstone Missouri, along with being an accomplished author and lecturer in Alternative Health and Chelation Therapy. He retired in 2012 to Arizona. <br />
            <br />
            He was married Norma Jean Enderson in October of 1964 until her death.<br />
            He was married Mary L Beason in Sept of 2006 until his death.<br />
            <br />
            He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Jean (Enderson) McDonagh, <br />
            His brothers James Edward and Ronald McDonagh, and his parents, James and Catherine (Wolff) McDonagh.<br />
            <br />
            He is survived by his wife, Mary L (Beason) McDonagh, two daughters, Jamie Sue (Brian) Gross and Jodi Ann (Rodney) Oathout, two stepchildren, six grandchildren and five step grandchildren.<br />
            <br />
            There will be a Celebration of Life at The National Clubhouse, 6700 N. National Drive,  Parkville, MO.  From 12 to 3 pm, September 16, 2018. <title>TACT2 Study Update: May 2018</title>

Funding for TACT2 was announced in September of 2016 when The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded $37M to initiate the trial. The trial is also co-funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.  <br />
<br />
TACT2 follows up on the positive results of TACT, an NIH-sponsored multicenter, double-blind safety and efficacy study, which took place from 2002- 2012 and was conducted in 134 sites across the United States and Canada. During TACT, 1,708 people with previous heart attacks were randomly assigned to receive 40 infusions of an edetate disodium-based chelation solution or a placebo (inactive) infusion.  Research participants also received an oral vitamin and mineral regimen, or an oral placebo. <br />
<br />
TACT demonstrated an 18% reduction in recurrent heart events by chelation in research participants who already had sustained a heart attack.  Recurrent heart events measured in the study were death, heart attack, stroke, heart bypass or stent, and hospitalization for angina (chest pains). In 633 diabetic research participants, there was an even larger benefit with a 41% reduction in recurrent heart events and a 43% reduction in deaths. Based on these results, the Mount Sinai and Duke scientists who conducted the trial felt that a repeat study was important to carry out. <br />
<br />
TACT2 will narrow its focus to the group with the greatest benefit in the original study - diabetics 50- years of age or older who have survived a prior heart attack. To date, 389 of 1,200 subjects have been randomized. <br />
<br />
“If TACT2 is positive, it will forever change the way we treat heart attack patients and view toxic metals in the environment,” said Gervasio Lamas, M.D., study chairman and chief of the Columbia Division of Cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Florida.  “Therefore, with NIH support and in collaboration with the Duke Clinical Research Institute, Columbia University, New York University, Mount Sinai (NYC), and hundreds of physicians and nurses throughout the U.S. and Canada, we are moving forward with TACT2.”<br />

<title>Lead Poisoning Afflicts Neighborhoods Across California</title>

Dozens of California communities have experienced recent rates of childhood lead poisoning that surpass those of Flint, Michigan, with one Fresno locale showing rates nearly three times higher, blood testing data obtained by Reuters shows.<br />
<br />
The data shows how lead poisoning affects even a state known for its environmental advocacy, with high rates of childhood exposure found in a swath of the Bay Area and downtown Los Angeles. And the figures show that, despite national strides in eliminating lead-based products, hazards remain in areas far from the Rust Belt or East Coast regions filled with old housing and legacy industry.<br />
<br />
In one central Fresno zip code, 13.6 percent of blood tests on children under six years old came back high for lead. That compares to 5 percent across the city of Flint during its recent water contamination crisis. In all, Reuters found at least 29 Golden State neighborhoods where children had elevated lead tests at rates at least as high as in Flint.<br />
<br />
“It’s a widespread problem and we have to get a better idea of where the sources of exposure are,” said California Assembly member Bill Quirk, who chairs the state legislature’s Committee on Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials.   <br />

With ongoing medical research validating the link between chronic diseases like heart disease and environmental exposure to toxic metals, it is more important than ever for doctors and patients to be well-informed about the detrimental effects of toxic metals and the potential treatments for heavy metal toxicity, including IV chelation therapy.</p>

Chelation is the binding of metals (like lead) or minerals (like calcium) to a protein “chelator” in a pincer-like fashion, forming a ring-like structure. Chelation is an important treatment protocol for the removal of toxic metals such as lead and mercury from the body’s bloodstream and tissues. Natural chelation, although weak, regularly occurs from eating certain foods such as onions and garlic. A stronger chelation effect can be induced when certain supplements, such as some amino acids, are taken orally. The strongest chelation effect is achieved with intravenous chelation.&nbsp;</p>

<title>Chelation Therapy: Life-Saving Alternative Treatment?</title>

For someone who has diabetes, and has also already suffered a heart problem, the chances for another heart attack, stroke or sudden death are very high.<br />
<br />
The government has now funded a new clinical trial.<br />
<br />
It could lead to a new way to treat heart disease, or it could prove skeptics right.<br />
<br />
Fifty-eight-year-old Lorrie Entwistle is hoping an infusion, given as part of a clinical trial, will help protect her heart.<br />
<br />
"I have 17 grandchildren and I want to be around here for them," said Entwistle of Riverside, New Jersey.<br />
<br />
Heart disease runs in her family. Both her grandfathers died of a heart attack. Her parents also have heart disease.<br />
<br />
She suffered her first heart attack at age 47. She also has diabetes, which puts her at an even greater risk for more problems.<br />
<br />
Dr. Allan Magaziner in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, is now one of several doctors nationwide involved in a trial to see if chelation can help.<br />
<br />
Chelation means to "bind to". The treatment uses an intravenous solution that binds to heavy metals in the blood, such as from industrial pollution. The body then flushes them out.<br />
<br />
It's only FDA approved to treat lead poisoning.<br />
<br />
But it's been given for years as an alternative therapy for many other uses, including heart disease.<br />
<br />
"The theory is by ridding the body of these heavy metals, the body will then function much better," said Dr. Allan Magaziner, Magaziner Center for Wellness.<br />
<br />
The theory is not proven, but it's getting another look after results of the first TACT trial to assess chelation therapy were published a few years ago.<br />
<br />
"It was very surprising to everyone once we teased out the data," said Dr. Magaziner.<br />
<br />
The biggest benefit was in heart patients who were also diabetic.</p>
<ul>
    <li>A 50 percent reduction in recurrent heart attacks.</li>
    <li>A 43 percent reduction in deaths.</li>
</ul>
<p>The NIH has now funded TACT 2, a $37 million double-blind trial to see if TACT 1 results can be replicated.<br />
<br />
There are still plenty of skeptics, including Dr. Douglas Jacoby, a preventative cardiologist at Penn Medicine.<br />
<br />
Like many, he doesn't buy into the theory, and as for the first trial, he says, "the issue is most of us still don't believe the results." He says there were technical issues and it's just one trial. He doesn't object to patients enrolling in TACT 2, but he emphasizes sticking to things that are proven to reduce risk.<br />
<br />
"A heart healthy lifestyle is important. Exercise can lower risk as much as chelation therapy did. Healthy diet is important and medicines are important," said Dr. Douglas Jacoby, Penn Medicine.<br />
<br />
Like all patients in the trial, Entwistle doesn't know if she's getting chelation or placebo. Patients get one three-hour-long infusion each week for 40 weeks, along with vitamins.<br />
<br />
"If I am getting chelation, I believe that it will help me," said Entwistle.<br />
<br />
"If the results are as effective in the TACT 2 trial as compared to TACT 1, it could change the scope of how we treat heart disease," said Dr. Magaziner. "This may be a preventable way to reduce risk of heart disease, stroke, sudden death in millions and millions of Americans."<br />
<br />
Most experts agree chelation is relatively safe if done as part of a clinical trial.<br />
<br />
They are still looking for volunteers. You must be at least 50 years old, have diabetes and experienced a prior heart attack.<br />

<title>For daring to study a discredited therapy, this doctor earned scorn — and a $37 million grant</title>

<p class="danger-zone" style="color: #222222; margin-bottom: 20px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px;">The new heart patient asked Dr. Gervasio Lamas if he thought chelation therapy was worth a try. “Of course not!” the cardiologist replied emphatically. His Harvard training had taught him that alternative therapies were a waste of time and money, and potentially risky to boot. “I told him it was quackery.”</p>
<p class="danger-zone" style="color: #222222; margin-bottom: 20px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px;">But Lamas went home that night unsure if he had given his patient the best medical advice. He looked up research on chelation therapy, which removes heavy metals from the body, and found very little data either supporting or contradicting the procedure.</p>
<p class="danger-zone" style="color: #222222; margin-bottom: 20px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px;">Lamas was troubled by the idea that he had offered this man a medical opinion that wasn’t supported by science. And he decided to conduct a study himself. He had no idea what he was getting into.<br />
</p>
<p style="color: #222222; margin-bottom: 20px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px;">Seventeen years later, his research into a therapy many of his colleagues consider bunk has earned him scorn and sideways glances at medical meetings. Some accuse him of wasting taxpayer money. But Lamas persevered — even briefly taking out a second mortgage on his house to help pay for a clinical trial.</p>
<p style="color: #222222; margin-bottom: 20px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px;">Three years ago, he announced results of that $30 million study: Chelation was safe and potentially helpful. The conclusion shocked the mainstream medical world, including Lamas. After all, the procedure had been so discredited that doctors previously could lose their medical licenses for using it.<br />

<description><![CDATA[Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration <a href="http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/ucm532474.htm" target="_blank"><span style="text-decoration: underline; color: #0083a9;">announced</span></a> that it issued for public comment a proposed rule, “List of Bulk Drug Substances That Can Be Used to Compound Drug Products in Accordance With Section 503A of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.” &nbsp;The proposed rule identifies six bulk drug substances that the Agency has evaluated and is proposing for inclusion on a list of bulk drug substances that can be used in compounding under section 503A. &nbsp;It also proposes that four other bulk drug substances that FDA evaluated not be included on the 503A bulks list. &nbsp;In addition, the proposed rule addresses criteria for evaluating bulk drug substances.&nbsp;<br />

The public comment period on the proposed rule closes in 90 days.<br />

<title>TACT2 Clinical Trial Receives National Institutes of Health Funding</title>

<description><![CDATA[<p><em>(Miami Beach, FL – September 27, 2016)</em> — The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded $37M to Mount Sinai Medical Center of Florida and the Duke Clinical Research Institute to initiate the second Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy (TACT2). The trial is also co-funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.<br />

TACT2 will examine the use of intravenous chelation treatments in combination with oral vitamins in diabetic patients with a prior heart attack to determine if they reduce recurrent heart episodes, such as heart attacks, stroke, death, and others, by removing toxins from the blood. Chelation is a process by which a medication, such as edetate disodium (Na2EDTA), can “grab” and remove toxic metal pollutants - like lead or cadmium - which are present in most individuals.<br />

TACT2 will narrow its focus to the group with the greatest benefit in the original study - diabetic patients 50- years of age or older who have survived a prior heart attack. &nbsp;The original TACT clinical results were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2013, Circulation: Quality and Outcomes in 2014, and the American Heart Journal in 2014.<br />

“If TACT2 is positive, it will forever change the way we treat heart attack patients and view toxic metals in the environment,” said Lamas. &nbsp;“Therefore, with NIH support and in collaboration with the Duke Clinical Research Institute, Columbia University, New York University, Mount Sinai (NYC), and hundreds of physicians and nurses throughout the U.S. and Canada, we are moving forward with TACT2.” <br />
<br />
A one-year planning phase for TACT2 was conducted and included finalizing the research protocol for the trial as well as gaining NIH approval. During this phase, the investigators also identified over 100 clinical research sites in the US and Canada that aim to enroll 1,200 cumulative patients in the trial.<br />

“The results of the original TACT study suggested that chelation of toxic environmentally-acquired metals may reduce cardiac risk, particularly in diabetic patients. &nbsp;If a second TACT study (TACT2) can confirm these interesting and relevant findings, it has great potential to change cardiac therapeutics.” said Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, Physician-in-Chief for Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and Director of Mount Sinai Heart.<br />

Although not approved by the Food and Drug Administration for treating heart disease, some practitioners have used chelation therapy for nearly 60 years in the absence of clinical trial data supporting its use. &nbsp;Because of the lack of data, it has generally been believed by conventional medical practitioners and cardiologists to be without value, although TACT results suggest otherwise. A definitive answer on chelation therapy in diabetic patients that will be embraced by the cardiology community will require positive results from TACT2. <br />

“Unless we can show a consistent effect across the two TACT Trials, it will be difficult for chelation to enter the mainstream of other cardiovascular therapies,” Lamas said. <br />

Candidates must be 50 years of age or older, have diabetes and experienced a prior heart attack. <title>JACC: Heavy Metals, Cardiovascular Disease, and the Unexpected Benefits of Chelation Therapy</title>

Considering these 2 areas of work together may lead to the identification of new, modifiable risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. <title>Chelation Therapy: Clinically Relevant or Just Quackery?</title>

Chelation therapy, a type of intravenous (IV) treatment promoted by some members of the complementary and alternative medicine community, has long been mired in controversy.</p>
<p>Often dismissed as quackery,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.empr.com/chelation-therapy-reduces-cv-events-in-elderly-with-diabetes/article/321604/" target="_blank">chelation therapy</a>&nbsp;was the subject of a recently completed NIH study (Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy [TACT]) that showed the practice to be of moderate benefit to heart-attack survivors. Yet the controversy continues unabated, with some calling the study misguided or flawed and few in the conventional medical community willing to embrace chelation therapy as a legitimate option for heart patients.<strong><br />
<br />
How Chelation Therapy Works</strong><br />
Chelation therapy consists of a series of IV administrations of disodium or calcium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) mixed with minerals and vitamins.</p>
<p>Typically, patients recline in a chair in the clinician’s office for one to four hours once to three times weekly for a series of 20 to 80 chelations. “Booster” chelations may be administered on a monthly basis or intermittently for years.</p>
<p>The purported benefits of chelation therapy vary but typically include the following:</p>
<ul>
    <li>Improves such circulatory disorders as coronary artery disease (CAD), cerebrovascular disease, or peripheral vascular disease;</li>
    <li>Detoxifies the body of such heavy metals as lead, cadmium, and mercury; and</li>
    <li>Combats degenerative diseases and slows the aging process.</li>
</ul>
<p>The procedure is usually not covered by Medicare or private insurance. The out-of-pocket costs are borne by patients and may total thousands of dollars for a single course of treatment.</p>
<p><strong><br />
History</strong><strong></strong><br />
The term&nbsp;<em>chelation</em>&nbsp;(derived from the Greek chelos or claw) refers to the mineral- or metal-binding properties of certain compounds that can hold a central cation in a pincerlike grip. Developed in Germany in 1935, EDTA was originally used as a means of binding and extracting calcium in the dye industry.</p>
<p>In the 1940s, Martin Rubin, Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C., discovered EDTA’s effects on calcium in biological systems. This discovery led to the product’s use as an anticoagulant and is still used in “purple top” blood-collection tubes. Professor Rubin’s research led him to advance the use of EDTA for treatment of hypercalcemia and, eventually, lead poisoning.</p>
<p>In the 1950s and 1960s, several clinicians began to observe that patients treated for lead poisoning with IV EDTA experienced improvements in their cardiovascular conditions. This observation led to the widespread, but mostly empirical, use of EDTA therapy for heart patients within a growing community of alternative medicine practitioners.</p>
<p>Studies were undertaken, but these were mostly observational or uncontrolled and involved only small numbers of patients. Chelation therapy for other than the approved indications of refractory hypercalcemia or severe lead toxicity remained highly touted but poorly substantiated.</p>
<p>Clinicians practicing chelation therapy were sometimes targeted by medical boards for disciplinary action, irrespective of whether specific patient harm had occurred. Some states adopted regulations prohibiting the practice of chelation therapy. To this day, disodium EDTA is not approved by the FDA to treat any diseases. However, disodium EDTA is produced by compounding pharmacies for individual patients, so the treatment can still be obtained.</p>
<p>In 1998, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) targeted the American College for Advancement of Medicine (ACAM), an organization that has trained and certified physicians in methods of safe administration of chelation therapy since the 1970s, for allegedly outsized advertising claims made regarding the treatment of atherosclerosis.</p>
<p>The FTC concluded that there was a lack of scientific studies to support these claims and that pro-chelation statements made by ACAM were false. As an alternative to litigation, ACAM stipulated that it would curtail public pronouncements presenting chelation therapy as an effective treatment for heart disease.</p>
<p>The public’s enthusiasm for chelation therapy remained undiminished, however. Between 2002 and 2007, use of chelation therapy to treat heart disease and other conditions grew in the United States by nearly 68% to 111,000 people.<sup>1</sup>&nbsp;As of the start of the TACT Study in 2001, it was estimated that patients received 800,000 individual EDTA infusions per year.<sup>2</sup></p>
<p>Until the TACT study, mainstream clinicians widely believed that EDTA chelation therapy for conditions other than acute lead intoxication was an unwarranted and dangerous modality. This is true to the extent that excessive doses of EDTA can be nephrotoxic; cases of renal failure resulting in dialysis or death have been recorded. Additionally, transient hypocalcemia provoked by EDTA calcium sequestration can trigger cardiac arrhythmias or sudden death.</p>
<p>But these outcomes have generally occurred only in rare instances where EDTA is administered in too high a dose and/or too rapidly or without regard to a patient’s glomerular flow rate. In 1989, a “Protocol for the Safe and Effective Administration of EDTA” was developed and subsequently updated.<sup>3</sup></p>
<p>The detailed protocol provides strict criteria for patient selection and cautions clinicians to perform an initial evaluation of renal function using the Cockcroft-Gault equation and to frequently monitor renal function throughout a series of chelation treatments. Emergency procedures are outlined should adverse reactions occur.</p>

Don’t cringe when you hear the term chelation (key-LAY-shun) therapy. If you have heard about it at all, you may have heard that it is alternative medicine, quackery, expensive, and even dangerous. New research funded by the National Institutes of Health is suggesting that this old treatment has some real life in it and that it may particularly benefit patients with diabetes mellitus and prior heart attacks.<br />
<br />
<strong><span style="font-size: 20px;">What Is Chelation Therapy?</span></strong><br />
Chelation therapy was first used in the early 20th century to treat metal poisoning. The treatment involves administering a drug called a chelator, which has a magnetically charged pocket that can “grab” a metal and hang onto it, kind of like a baseball mitt with a magnet in its pocket, allowing the metal to be excreted in the urine. One chelator,<br />
calcium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to treat lead poisoning. Alternative medicine practitioners have been using a similar chelator, disodium EDTA, to treat heart disease, claiming to see benefits, since<br />
the 1950s. <br />
<br />
Disodium EDTA chelation therapy is usually administered intravenously each week for 20 to 40 sessions. Each intravenous infusion may last hours. In spite of the expense and tedium, the 2008 National Health Statistics Report stated that 111000 people used chelation in 2007. <br />

<title>Na2EDTA Chelation Therapy Can Decrease baPWV in Elderly Patients</title>

<font style="font-size: 12px;">The purpose of this study is to disclose whether Na2EDTA chelation therapy can be used as patient care for the treatment of atherosclerosis. To evaluate the stiffness of the artery, we used brachial ankle Pulse Wave Velocity (baPWV). This indicates the stiffness of the major artery and detect the atherosclerosis.<br />
<br />
<b>Patients and Methods:</b><br />
We have examined baPWV retrospectively. 118 patients ,73 males and 45 females, averaged age 72.8 (48 to 89) years old, have been treated with Na2EDTA chelation therapy (Na2EDTA 1.5g, Half chelation) and PWV measurements have been performed four times in every patients. The first measurement is done before the chelation therapy (PWV1), second is after ten chelations (PWV2), third one is after 20 chelations (PWV3) and the fourth one is after 30 chelations (PWV4). Na2EDTA 1.5 g was infused with vitamins and minerals according to the formula modified from ACAM's Protocol.<br />

<b>Results:</b><br />
There were statistically significant decrease in PWV1 to PWV2,PWV3 and PWV4.(p&lt;0.0001)<br />

<b>Conclusions:</b><br />
The decrease in baPWV indicates the changes of the major arterial stiffness and may confirm the effectiveness of Na2EDTA chelation therapy. Although 3.0 grams of Na2EDTA have been used for the TACT study, half dose of Na2EDTA may be also effective for the patient care of atherosclerosis.<br />
