Who is AAOSH?

Founded in 2010, the American Academy for Oral Systemic Health is an organization of healthcare leaders and health professionals dedicated to expanding awareness of the relationship between oral health and whole body health. AAOSH membership includes, and is open to, health professionals from many allied health disciplines, corporate supporters and sponsors, health educators, and healthcare leaders.

Membership and Academy activities, meetings, research and communications are all supportive of helping members of the healthcare community to work closer together and helping to improve the oral and general health of our patients and our communities.

Understanding the emerging science-driven relationships between the mouth and the body, AAOSH promotes medical-dental partnership, building closer ties between allied health professionals and improving interdisciplinary communication and professional referral relationships.

Who is AAPMD?

Founded in 2012, the American Academy of Physiological Medicine and Dentistry is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing its professional membership tools and ability to recognize the role and importance of optimal airway physiology and sleep in the areas of health, development, performance, and function.

The AAPMD seeks to accomplish this through:

• Developing innovative educational programs
• Promoting Optimal treatment
• Advancing interdisciplinary collaboration
• Fostering public awareness
• Providing multidisciplinary referral resources for optimal care
• Promoting affordable airway care for all

Their healthcare practitioner membership includes physicians, dentists, osteopaths, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, myofunctional therapists, nutritionists and more.

ACAM and AAPMD leaders were on a call early this morning with the claims adjuster assigned to us via our event insurance company.  We have notified them officially that we will be seeking a claim for our meetings and have been advised of the next steps required for documentation. This process will be underway over the next weeks and we'll ask for your patience in seeking refunds on registration or exhibiting monies as we work through the required submission materials.  We will also be legally notifying the headquarter hotel, The Condado Plaza Hilton, of our cancellation and request that our Impossibility Clause be recognized, so they may honor the return of hotel deposits and waive the nonrefundable hotel charges within their normal 30 day cancellation penalty period. There will be no rescheduling of these 2017 meetings, as our organizations are already committed to contracts for the 2018 meetings. 

There is no need to contact ACAM or AAPMD to cancel your registration as our notification to the hotel and our registration company will effectively cancel you, provided you booked your hotel through A Meeting by Design, our authorized Housing and Meeting Management company. If you booked your hotel through other sources, you will need to cancel these yourself, as we have no control over their policies or regulations. You will need to work directly through your airline to facilitate a re schedule or obtain credit for your airline tickets according to their policies.

(CNN) The Zika virus epidemic that's been plaguing Puerto Rico for the past year is over, the governor's office announced Monday.

The mosquito-borne disease, which is also sexually transmitted, is of greatest concern to pregnant women and those trying to become pregnant and their partners because of the devastating consequences it can have on a fetus.

"While there are very low levels of mosquito-borne Zika transmission now, it is important that we remain vigilant to keep these numbers down and support families already affected by Zika," State Epidemiologist Dr. Carmen Deseda said in a news release Monday announcing the end of the epidemic.

1.    Nutritional imbalances and deficiencies. Brain function can be strongly influenced by what we put in our mouths: some foods promote brain health, and others can erode it over time. Diets that contain brain boosting foods and supplements have been shown to preserve and restore healthy brain function.

2.    Toxins in food, water, air, work/home environments. Everything from artificial food additives, to pollutants in our water and air, to chemicals in our household cleaning products and furnishings, build up over time in our body. This “body burden” makes us more susceptible to all kinds of illnesses, including dementia.

3.    Effects of prescription medications. Drugs, especially pain meds, psychotropic drugs, and statins (which attack the very substance of which the brain is made) can severely disrupt cognition.

4.    Mercury and other heavy metal toxicity. So-called silver amalgam fillings contain 50 percent mercury, and that mercury can create vapor, cross the blood-brain barrier, and destroy neurons even without contact. Safe removal is key along with minimizing our exposure to large “steak fish,” polluted air and vaccines.

5.    Hormonal imbalances (T3 thyroid, estrogen, testosterone and others). Many people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia have low levels of T3 thyroid hormone. However, standard thyroid tests completely miss T3 levels, and Synthroid (T4) may be ineffective, especially as we age.  Low hormone levels (HGH, estrogens, progesterone and testosterone) put us at risk as well.

6.    Inflammation from low-level infections (Lyme Disease, oral infections, food sensitivities, mold, etc.). Inflammation is the body’s response to injury and/or foreign substances in the body, and can cause pain or be asymptomatic. A short-term inflammatory response results in healing; if inflammation persists and becomes chronic, it leads to a host of problems, including confusion and memory loss. Common causes are root canals, urinary tract infections, food sensitivities and allergies, mold toxicity, and Lyme’s Disease. These last two are on the rise and become harder to treat the longer they go undiagnosed. 

7.    Inadequate physical activity, mental stimulation and social interaction. Maintaining meaningful relationships, keeping physically active by exercising, and pursuing our passions and interests all contribute to staying mentally intact as we age. Combining at least two of these activities simultaneously gives our brains an even bigger boost!

8.    Stress, especially life changes and how we process information.
As the body ages, it becomes more vulnerable to stress.   Stress elevates cortisol levels, which can cause hypertension, elevated blood sugar levels, hormone imbalances, delayed healing time, and susceptibility to disease. Major life changes, such as financial issues, moving, illness, and the loss of a partner and beloved friends are all stressful events. Our outlook on aging, and how we process these events, determine the toll they take on us.

9.    Sleep and breathing problems related to oxygen deficiency. Airway/Sleep Disorders (ASD) are surprisingly common and often go undetected even by dental professionals. People suffering from ASD experience fatigue, fogginess and cognitive issues and often fall asleep during the day. Untreated ASD deprives the brain of much-needed oxygen, short circuits vitally important detoxing and restorative functions, and can thus lead to dementia.

10. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is now known to be a cause of dementia. The incidence of TBIs is steadily rising due to falls, car and pedestrian accidents, high contact sports, combat injuries and other violence.

Before concluding a person’s dementia is incurable, all of these causes need to be evaluated and treated. As more causes of dementia are discovered and successful treatment is supported by scientific research, we will add them to this list.
