UPDATE: Hurricane Irma & its affect on ACAM Annual Meeting

Dear Elizabeth,

This morning, we see on the news that Hurricane Irma largely skirted Puerto Rico by staying just out to sea; we are still awaiting contact from the local authorities and hotel management to provide us with a first hand update on conditions. We are thankful that Irma did not cause the immediate devastation predicted and our support is with the Puerto Rican community as it regroups and recovers.
At the same time, we are joining the Nation as we await the next targeted areas in Hurricane Irma's path and watch Hurricane Jose make an appearance.  We understand the travel concerns and realize it may be impossible for many of us to travel for the ACAM/AAPMD meetings next week in San Juan. We are hopeful to hear from the General Manager of the Condado Plaza Hilton and the local Convention and Visitors bureau by the end of today as to the status of their city.  Additionally, we've scheduled a second call with our event insurance underwriter for first thing tomorrow (Friday) morning as we've notified them we expect to make a claim regardless of the conditions in San Juan.
As it stands now, we are in the same amount of anxiety for information as are all of you. Your safety, well-being, and the quality of the meeting property, infrastructure and commodities are our highest priority right now as we await news from San Juan.  We we ask that you have patience with us as we work through the communications and track the storm system and its consequences. The airlines are sending waivers for those traveling through expected targets of the hurricane to you as individuals.  We encourage you to check with your selected airline and review their rebook policies as we wait to receive formal notice of conditions and probability over the next 24 hours.
At this time, this is what we know. Please feel free to contact the ACAM HQ offices at 1.800.532.3688, 8:00am-5:00pm MST, however, for the time being, we are waiting to learn more just as you are.
Thank you,

Michael Bauerschmidt, MD
ACAM President
