Mindfulness in Medicine
Mark Abramson, DDS
Dr. Mark Abramson founded the Stanford, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Clinic in 1995 modeled after the University of Massachusetts MBSR clinic founded by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD 40 years ago and featured on Bill Moyer's PBS series, “Healing and the Mind.”

MBSR is designed to teach mind and body awareness techniques for coping with physical or psychological symptoms from stress and stress-related illnesses. By learning mindfulness meditation techniques, including mindful yoga and body movement, participants are taught to use their inner resources to relieve stress and manage pain more effectively through the eight week program.

Courses at Stanford bring together Stanford students; stressed the public, parents and Silicon Valley workers; and patients, referred into the clinic to treat a broad range of medical conditions using mindfulness practices to support better health and happiness.

Dr. Abramson conducts programs in mindfulness to corporations, has taught at the World Economic Forum and national organizations such as the ADA.

Dr. Abramson, who is a dentist, has developed an unique practice specializing in the treatment of chronic pain and temporomandibular disorders, with a non-drug oriented care integrating traditional approaches with mind/body techniques, osteopathic manual medicine, and acupuncture.

He has invented the OASYS dental systems for treatment sleep apnea and is an international lecturer in the field of dental sleep medicine and orofacial pain management. Dr. Abramson is one of two doctors in the state of California to be board certified in dental sleep medicine and orofacial pain and holds a black belt in the martial art of Aikido.

  Lecture Description:
Mindfulness is the core skill in all ancient contemplative practices. Mindfulness has spread from its center of religious discipline to be incorporated into best business practices (corporate management, productivity and creativity), sports performance, medical care. Modern science has been applied to quantify effectiveness of mindfulness practices and has confirmed impact on mental health, immunity, physiological function in neuroscience and neuroplasticity, basic physiology of the autonomic nervous system, down to the health of our chromosomes and expression of genes.

Dr. Abramson will present the latest science and lead the group in mindfulness practices. He presents this lecture with Dr. Bill Demment in his “Sleep and Dreams” course at Stanford University and Dr. Abramson is the founding director of Stanford Medical School’s MBSR course.
