Get a Glimpse of the New Docufilm "Vitality"
ACAM is pleased to announce a screening of an exciting new documentary film called "Vitality" at our event this November. Starring Dr. Hyla Cass and several of our esteemed colleagues, this movie really sets the tone for a dialogue that is missing in the healthcare debate in this country- namely that true health or Vitality is a product of lifestyle. This movie is an excellent patient education tool and we are happy to be supporting its message in our community. Join us during our Saturday lunch presentation for a three-minute preview and again at 3:30pm on Saturday afternoon where we will screen the movie and have a lively discussion with filmmaker, Pedram Shojai, OMD (founder of Well.Org) and Hyla Cass, MD.

Divide and Conquer: The latest strategy at Codex
By Scott C. Tips
Sunset pinked the German sky as the Codex delegates sat at their conference-room tables, a long first day already behind them, still debating health standards that will affect billions worldwide. Naturally a day filled with such debates – especially over technical language for draft guidelines for vitamin-and-mineral Nutrient Reference Values (NRVs) as well as draft Principles about adding essential nutrients to foods – would trick the delegates’ sense of time as they crawled through reams of documents, making a long day seem even longer.

    AUTISM

Autism signs may be detectable in 1st months of life, and it's all in the eyes
    HNGN
Researchers found the earliest-known signs of autism that occur within the first few months of life. The researchers followed babies from when they were born to three years of age in order to identify the earliest signs of autism, an Emory Health Sciences news release reported. "By following these babies from birth, and intensively within the first six months, we were able to collect large amounts of data long before overt symptoms are typically seen," Warren Jones, Ph.D., lead author on the study, said.

Physical activity as an alternative treatment for depression
    SBWire
Research has suggested that being physically active has mental benefits in addition to physical ones. But recently, a review published in the Journal of Preventive Medicine has taken this conclusion one step further and suggested that moderate exercise can actually prevent depression, anxiety, and other mental conditions from ever developing.

    FIBROMYALGIA

New drugs, treatment for fibromyalgia sufferers
    The Washington Times Communities
Fibromyalgia sufferers experience pain, fatigue, body temperature flux and other difficulties. The causes and the symptoms of fibromyalgia (FM) vary widely by individual, and both sufferers and physicians treating them often are unaware of the full spectrum of treatments that offer relief. Some physicians, who remain unaware that FM is a physical disorder and continue to categorize it as psychological, may not be interested in pursuing treatment for patients.

    GMO LABELING

    GMO-labeling measure fails
    Walla Walla Union-Bulletin
Washington voters were rejecting a measure that would have made the state the first in the nation to require labeling of genetically engineered foods. The measure trailed 45 to 55 percent — a margin that appeared impossible to overcome. It was a stunning reversal for an initiative that two-thirds of voters supported in early polls. But opponents, backed by Monsanto and other large agribusinesses, outspent proponents by a ratio of nearly 3-to-1, making the initiative campaign one of the costliest in state history.

After Washington GMO label battle, both sides eye national fight
    Reuters via KFGO-TV
Both sides of the costly and high-stakes GMO labeling battle in Washington state say they see an even bigger national fight ahead despite the apparent defeat of the mandatory labeling measure by Washington state voters. The measure died 47.05 percent to 52.95 percent, according to results updated Thursday night by the Washington Secretary of State's office as results continued to trickle in. The likely loss followed a similar defeat last year in California when a ballot initiative there also failed to pass.

    KIDNEY TRANSPLANTS

    Opinion: I want my kidney
    The Scientist
Can organs like kidneys be made, to save lives? How efficiently can we custom-make highly differentiated cells, like podocytes (the kidney’s filtering cells), in Petri dishes and use them to develop better future therapies? At a TED conference held in Long Beach, California, in 2011, Anthony Atala of Wake Forest University’s Institute for Regenerative Medicine demonstrated printing something that looked a lot like a human kidney by using live cells deposited in layers.
