Don't Empower the FDA to Take Away Your Access to Compounded Medications

On April 26, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) released draft legislation that would "clarify" the FDA's ability to regulate both compounding pharmacies and the compounded medications themselves. It's our understanding that the draft bill was written with the specific intent of giving the FDA broad authority to remove compounded medications from the market in one of two ways: either by putting bulk ingredients on a list of "banned" compounded drugs, or by redefining compounded variations of approved drugs as illegal "copies."

GMO Labeling Bill Introduced in Congress — How You Can Help

Last Wednesday, the Genetically Engineered Food Right-to-Know Act was introduced in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) with nine Senate and twenty-two House cosponsors, would require food manufacturers to clearly label any product that has been genetically engineered or contains genetically engineered ingredients, or else the product would be classified as "misbranded" by the FDA.

ACAM Mourns Death of Cascade Anderson Geller
ACAM
American herbalist, educator and environmental activist Cascade Anderson Geller passed away at the age of 59 on HerbDay, May 4, following a few-month illness. Since the early 1970s, Geller worked as a full-time herbalist, teacher, mother, wife, medicine maker, eco-tour leader and citizen-earth activist. She was a founding member of Everett House Healing Center in Portland and an associate professor and department chair of Botanical Medicine at the National College of Naturopathic (now Natural) Medicine.

"Can naturopaths deliver complementary preventive medicine?" Thus ran the headline in a recent editorial in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. The editorial was written in reference to the publication in the same edition of a randomized clinical trial led by Dugald Seely, N.D. Seely and 13 colleagues, most from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, published their findings that individualized, whole person-oriented naturopathic care produced reduced cardiovascular risk for a group of Canadian postal workers.
