From the Desk of the Director
Michael Boutot, ACAM Executive Director
Hope in Hollywood
The ACAM Spring Conference is now behind us and we are able to report on a successful event. The conference began with a warm welcome, followed by a brief moment of silence in honor of Dr. Richard Linchitz, a former ACAM Director and big supporter of ACAM and integrative medicine. Dr. Linchitz passed on earlier this year.

There were many "firsts" at this year's conference.

This year we presented the first ever Integrative Psychiatry workshops. Katherine Falk, MD, an integrative psychiatrist out of the New York City area assisted ACAM in coordinating this first ever event at an ACAM conference.

Another first was having Dr. Gervasio "Tony" Lamas present a lecture as a result of his involvement in the 12-year TACT trial findings. Dr. Lamas provided our attendees with an invigorating presentation during our Saturday lunch hour with a powerful display of charts and graphs. Dr. Lamas was also presented with the Norman E. Clarke, Sr. Award for exemplary dedication to the research and science of EDTA chelation therapy.

In Memory: Dr. Richard Linchitz
ACAM
Dr. Richard Linchitz dedicated his life to medical health and patient care. After graduating with honors from Cornell University Medical College, he completed his residency at the famed University of California, San Francisco, and Moffit Hospital. Moved by the personal stories of those living with chronic pain, Dr. Linchitz founded the first and only outpatient nationally accredited multi-specialty pain program in New York. Over the 22 years he managed the Pain Alleviation Center, he developed an integrated program of pain intervention based on lifestyle changes, rather than pharmaceutical-based solutions. Dr. Linchitz always lived by his own advice. An accomplished athlete, he lived what he thought was a healthy lifestyle until a diagnosis of lung cancer in 1998 (despite never having smoked) forever changed his life, career and overall perspective on medicine.

Danger: Cherry-Picked Drug Studies!
Alliance for Natural Health
The RECORD trial (see our article in this issue) is just one example of how drug study data can be manipulated by pharmaceutical companies and the FDA. But it gets worse—even if a study finds a drug isn’t very safe or effective, it’s likely you and your doctor will never hear about it. The problem—called publication bias—is widespread. About half of all drug trials aren’t made publicly available, and positive findings are twice as likely to be published as negative findings for the same drug.

If Dr. Offit Had His Way, Vitamins Would Be Treated as Drugs
Alliance for Natural Health
The New York Times has published another shameful op-ed bashing nutritional supplements. Here's our response. This week, Dr. Paul A. Offit, chief of the infectious diseases division of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (and author of a forthcoming book called, hilariously enough, Do You Believe in Magic?: The Sense and Nonsense of Alternative Medicine), wrote a piece for the New York Times called "Don't Take Your Vitamins."
