ESCAPE FIRE: The Fight To Rescue American Healthcare

A film by Matthew Heineman and Susan Froemke

I recently had the opportunity to view the film ESCAPE FIRE: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare, which was released on October 5th, 2012 in select theaters, on iTunes, and via Video on Demand. ESCAPE FIRE premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and has gone on to win numerous film festival awards nationwide. It has been hailed by Sundance senior programmer David Courier as the "definitive film on American healthcare." It was also recently aired on CNN.

Who Needs Healthy Food When We Can Eat Cash?
Scott C. Tips
President of the National Health Federation

The hazy, smoggy skies over Beijing during these March days are emblematic of the Codex meetings that the National Health Federation has been attending for many days here in China. The sun only shimmers as a strange, pale orange globe, casting an ethereal, almost futuristic "Bladerunner" look to the cityscape while city residents glide silently past with white face masks and we Codex delegates and staff work inside overheated rooms on international food-additive standards. Given what has transpired, the setting seems apt.

Your Tax Dollars May Buy 400,000 Tons of Sugar to Keep Prices Artificially High
Alliance for Natural Health
Welcome to the government sugar/industrial/drug complex. Sugar—in all its forms—is considered the primary cause of type 2 diabetes. It also suppresses the immune system, is linked to cancer, and leads to cognitive problems, as we reported last year. Government subsidies, taking a great variety of forms, are increasing rather than decreasing. Diabetes drug sales are now $35 billion with other related illness sales even higher. Some good news came out recently for those with type 2, non-insulin dependent diabetics that will lower the burden and costs of your care. Collaboration found that monitoring home blood sugars four to seven times a week in such patients does not reduce the HbA1C more than less frequent self-monitoring of one to two times a week. This is good news since the cost of glucose strips and the discomfort and inconvenience of daily finger sticks has long been a nuisance to patients.

Latest 'Red Meat Study' Doubly Flawed
Alliance for Natural Health
No, meat is not unsafe—nor is L-carnitine. A recent study published in the journal Nature Medicine associates the amino acid L-carnitine, found in red meat, supplements, and sports supplements, with the risk of heart disease. Here are some examples of what the media said about it: The Daily Mail (UK): "Red meat nutrient used in weight-loss and muscle-building supplements could cause heart disease"! The Dallas News: “Put down that steak! (and energy drinks, too); the carnitine in these foods may increase risk of cardiovascular disease”!
