From the Desk of the Director
Michael Boutot, ACAM Executive Director
Risk Management in a Risky Environment
As our society becomes more and more litigious, ACAM is concerned that our members and those associated with complementary, alternative and integrative modalities of treatment have greater exposure and risk factors than traditional doctors. In fact, as evidenced by a recent survey of several insurance companies, many insurance providers are refusing to write insurance policies for those involved in any form of complementary, alternative or integrative medicine. If they are writing such policies, their rates are higher than that of traditional practitioners. That is why I am writing this article "Risk Management in a Risky Environment". It is risky not only because we are in such a litigious society, but also because we are in a risky industry.

Can We Change Our Mental Health Genes?
TotalHealth
Epigenetics is a word unfamiliar to most of us, but is becoming better known daily. This emerging science is steadily revealing the causes of many of the world's most challenging medical disorders, such as cancer and heart disease, and is providing a roadmap for developing vastly improved therapies. New research indicates that many mental disorders also appear to be epigenetic in nature, and that improved treatments are available for such conditions as schizophrenia, clinical depression, autism, ADHD, and criminal behavior. Moreover, these new therapies are based on natural substances rather than pharmaceutical drugs, with their inexact targets and difficult side effects. This is the subject of Dr. Walsh's information-packed new book, Nutrient Power.

The Psychology of Illness
Online Psychology Degree
Illness, whether acute or chronic, often impacts much more than just our physical health and well -being. The mind and body both play a role in coping with, recovering from, and preventing a wide range of illnesses, and there are often major ramifications for both if either sees major disruption. This relationship between our psychological selves and physical selves is often complex and, in some cases, is poorly understood, but that doesn’t make it any less important or revelatory. What follows is an exploration of the multifaceted study of the psychology of illness, addressing the numerous ways our physical and mental well-being intersect, overlap, and influence one another.
Homeopathy Under Attack in California
Alliance for Natural Health
Because homeopathic medicines are protected at the federal level, the attempt to eliminate them is coming at the state level. Homeopathic medicines are protected as legal drugs under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C)—which means homeopathic manufacturers can make disease claims. We can thank a brave legislator for insisting on this when the Act was enacted many decades ago.
Alternative Care Goes Mainstream
The Vancouver Sun
When Dr. Ashley Riskin sits down with a new patient, the interview takes far longer than the industry standard eight minutes.
Riskin's first consultation lasts a full hour with a physician and 30 minutes with a health planner and focuses on the totality of the patient's well-being, not just illness or symptoms, but diet, stress factors, exercise and sleep.
It’s an approach that until recently was far more common among so-called complementary and alternative practitioners such as naturopathic doctors, homeopaths and doctors of traditional Chinese medicine.
Allergy Patients Turning to Homeopathy for Relief
KHOU-TV
Allergies are difficult to control without prescription drugs, but clinics have been popping up all over town promising natural remedies.
Every year it seems the allergy season starts earlier and ends later.
"Spring in Houston starts in January," said Dr. Frank Orson, with Baylor Medical Center.
He said some of his clients are ditching over-the-counter medicines.
Traditional Marketing for Integrative Medicine Still Effective
FON Therapeutics
While there's no denying the Internet's huge impact on just about everything, including the continued ascent of evidence-based integrative health, the following facts should not be overlooked when considering an overarching marketing approach to increasing clinic utilization and the sale of natural products and services.
Seasonal Allergies are Getting Worse Every Year
Alliance for Natural Health
According to the Harvard Health Letter, seasonal allergies are starting earlier every year and pollen counts are rising. At least 36 million people are affected by seasonal allergies each year in the U.S. Uncovering what makes the immune system respond the way it does is important. There are natural approaches to seasonal allergies that work well.
